Blair Hartley

Richmond Executive General Manager, Football Talent, Blair Hartley, spoke to the media tonight at the conclusion of the AFL Trade Period.

On Jayden Short trade discussions with Collingwood (via AFL Trade Radio and press conference)...

"I'm disappointed for Jayden that it didn't work out but we are excited to have him back. He's fine, I've spoken to Jayden through the whole process, along with everyone else at the Club. It was something he was keen to explore. We said we'd listen, there wasn't a lot of talking, and he's welcome back at Richmond straightaway. Speaking with Anthony McConville [Short's manager], who was quite open throughout the whole process of the deal on what it might look like. We just probably didn't get to a line where it was looking like it was going to get done, so, in the end, it was off.

"I think [Short's] already been fined in the group chat for requesting a trade and not getting to the club that he wanted to go to. He's spoken to Adem [Yze], he's spoken to myself, I think he's already booked to go into the Club tomorrow and hit the ground running. We're excited to have him back. He's a much loved member of our playing group, he's played a really pivotal role through our successful period and he's fully committed to the Club going forward. He's still got a heap of good footy and up until the last little block of our year, he was third in our Best and Fairest. I think he's got a lot of really good football left in him."

On the trade with Port Adelaide to secure pick No.5 in this year's draft (via AFL Trade Radio)...

"These deals don't happen overnight. I've been speaking to Jason [Cripps, Power list manager] a lot this year throughout, obviously, what was happening with Zak [Butters], and then, we are always looking for opportunities to maximise. Sitting in the futures game on Grand Final Day, and we looked down and 23 of the 46 that are on the field we don't have access to due to a variety of reasons, father-son, academy, NGA, Tasmania access, and then throw on top of that, seven of the 13 for the first round of the draft next year are out with Tasmania already. That's 30 out of 46 we are looking like we can't get access to. Whereas, on the other hand, for Port Adelaide, those picks really do have some value with some father-son and academy access they have for them next year. I think it works out well for both parties. Rhy Gieschen, our recruiting team, Oliver Grant, having Nick Austin back on board, they've been hard at work the last few weeks and been putting all sorts of pressure on us to end up with those couple of picks inside five."

Hartley believes the Tigers have made "pretty positive off-field changes with Selwyn Griffith [High Performance Manager] coming on board and Brett Ratten [Head of Coaching and Strategy]".

He added getting the list healthy and on the field playing together will be "exciting for our fans".
