It’s fair to say Richmond was due for a win in a close game.

The Tigers had lost their previous five matches decided by less than a goal, before hanging on to defeat Geelong by three points in a thrilling finish under the MCG lights last night.

Following Sam Lloyd’s momentous, set-shot goal after the final siren against Sydney in Round 8 of the 2016 season, from the Punt Road end of the ground, which secured a one-point Richmond win, the team lost to Geelong by four points at the MCG in Round 21 that year, to the Western Bulldogs by five points in Round 7, 2017 at Etihad Stadium, to Fremantle by two points at the MCG in Round 8, 2017, to Greater Western Sydney by three points at Spotless Stadium in Round 9, 2017, and to the Giants by two points in Round 17, 2018 at Spotless Stadium.

Interestingly, it was Lloyd who kicked what turned out to be the match-sealing goal against the Cats in last night’s clash, again from the Punt Road end, steering through a set-shot six-pointer at the 15-minute mark of the last quarter to put the Tigers 23 points ahead.
