Richmond defender Chris Newman will miss the final two weeks of the Tigers' pre-season, and is in doubt for the Club's season opener on April 2.

Newman experienced some discomfort at training recently, with tests confirming a cardiac arrhythmia (abnormal heart rhythm).

"Chris has seen a cardiologist specialising in this area, and he has confirmed that the diagnosis is a relatively benign one," said Richmond General Manager of Football, Dan Richardson.

"However, the decision has been made to rectify the situation with a procedure to eliminate the trigger of the abnormal cardiac rhythm.

"The procedure is relatively straightforward and has been done successfully in many high level athletes, including AFL footballers.

"We are expecting that Chris will be off training for a couple of weeks, and then should be able to resume full training, and play soon after."

Newman is embarking on his 15th season at AFL level, and has played 251 games for the Tigers.
