Mark ‘Choco’ Williams is a man that needs no introduction to football fans around Australia.

After playing and coaching VFL/AFL for over 30 years, Williams has found his way to Punt Road, and now wears the yellow and black, as a Development Coach with Richmond.

He joins Greg Mellor and Tim Clarke, who focus on mentoring and developing the Club’s young players, as part of Richmond’s player development program.

Williams is the first to say that he’s “been around” in the football world, in a decorated career that includes being the premiership coach of Port Adelaide in 2004.

More recently, he joins Richmond after two years at Greater Western Sydney, and explains the allure of returning to a big, traditional football club like Richmond was an enticing opportunity.

“The first time I was introduced to the players, the first thing I said was, ‘you better understand how lucky you are to be at this club’,” Williams told Roar Vision.

“I was lucky enough to come to the Best and Fairest, and I felt like I’d been there for years. I can’t believe how many people have come off the street, to have a chat to me, and welcome me to the Club,” he said.

Williams is already looking forward to Richmond’s season opener against Carlton, and anticipates a strong showing by the Tiger Army at the MCG.

“It’s something I’ve really missed. I’ve been at clubs that haven’t been able to draw a crowd for a long time now, and it’s going to bring about great memories of a full-house at the MCG, and winning big games is what it’s all about.”

Since joining the ranks at Richmond, Williams has been working with the 1-3 year players, as well as those still trying to secure a regular spot in the playing group.

Williams will focus on the players’ football development, and ensure the younger players understand football terms, game plans and structures.

“If you can instil a great work ethic into them, make sure that they understand the game plan, and if they work hard, they’ll get there,” says Williams.

“That’s what we’re here to do, drive them along and give them some guidance along the way.”
