The Richmond fan favourite stepped right up in 2021.

Grimes claimed his first Jack Dyer Medal, winning a tight count ahead of Liam Baker and Jack Graham, who tied for second.

It was a nice progression for the consistent defender, who had strung together six consecutive top-10 finishes in the preceding years.

Grimes showed outstanding leadership throughout the season while taking over as the club’s No. 1 intercept player.

The three-time premiership backman is locked away until the end of 2023, having penned a two-year deal early last year.

In February 2022, Grimes was named as a co-captain of the Richmond Football Club alongside ruckman Toby Nankervis.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick said the pair set the highest of examples for their teammates.

"Dylan and Toby play football the way we think it should be played. They are tough, uncompromising, and team orientated," Hardwick said.

Honours: best and fairest 2021; 3rd best and fairest 2019; All-Australian 2019; All-Australian nominee 2018, 2020; NAB AFL Rising Star nominee 2012; premiership sides 2017, 2019, 2020, Richmond co-captain 2022.

Brownlow Medal: 2021 votes 1; career votes 4.

Draft history: 2010 NAB AFL Pre-Season Draft 1st round selection (Richmond) No. 2.
