Toby Nankervis has reflected favourably on his first season as Richmond’s co-captain.

The triple Tiger premiership star ruckman, who shared the captaincy duties at Punt Road with Dylan Grimes in 2022, told Richmond Media in a post-season interview that he was pleased with his development in the role.

“First year as captain was definitely something different, obviously. A lot of learnings from it and probably a lot of things I would have done differently,” Nankervis said.

“But really proud of my growth as a person, I think, from the whole experience. And, hopefully, I can continue that going forward.

“Really going to look back after my career the feeling of leading the boys out. And so many players and staff have really backed me in this year . . . their support’s been amazing. So, I’m really grateful for that.

Nankervis was the Tigers’ sole skipper for the last four games of their 2022 campaign due to Grimes being sidelined with a hamstring injury.

“Not having him there, game day, I was a little bit uneasy about it. But again, I think I’m really proud of my growth in that area and I was able to deal with it pretty well,” Nankervis said.

“Definitely a lot of learnings taken out.”

Nankervis played all 23 games for Richmond this season, averaging 17.1 disposals, 4.0 clearances, 4.6 score involvements, 3.7 tackles, 27.2 hit-outs, 3.7 one-percenters and 185.1 metres gained per match.

He had the most disposals and hit-outs of his AFL career and was ranked fourth in the competition for total hit-outs.

“I think I had a pretty consistent year,” Nankervis said.

“Managed to play every game, which I hadn’t done for a few years . . . and stay injury-free, which was nice.”

Nankervis is optimistic about the Tigers’ prospects for the 2023 season.

“Although we fell over in the first final, I think we can take some real positives out, as a group . . . and no doubt take that into next year,” he said.
