The excellent role carried out by triple Richmond premiership defender Nathan Broad on Geelong’s superstar key forward Jeremy Cameron in last Friday night’s big clash at the MCG earned him the most votes for the match in the 2023 AFL Coaches’ Association’s Player of the Year award Round 9 voting.

Broad received eight votes after restricting the damaging Cameron to only one goal. He combined tight defence and quality offensive work, finishing the match with 19 disposals, seven marks, equal team-high six rebound-50s, equal game-high 11 intercepts, a game-high 12 one-percenters and 361 metres gained.

Jayden Short, who was at his territory-taking best for the Tigers, with a game-high 714 metres gained, polled seven votes. He also had 26 disposals, an equal team-high nine marks, five inside-50s, equal team-high six rebound-50s, four clearances, five intercepts and six score involvements.

Dustin Martin picked up six votes for his vintage display – 19 disposals, equal team-high nine marks, game-high four goals, team-high nine score involvements and 410 metres gained.

Five votes went the way of dashing defender Daniel Rioli, who had 23 disposals, six marks, four rebound-50s, four intercepts, seven score involvements, 513 metres gained and kicked a goal.

Rounding out Richmond’s Round 9 vote-winners in the prestigious coaches’ award was Liam Baker, with one vote.
