With Richmond preparing to face the Kangaroos this Sunday at the MCG, the Club looks back at some iconic moments in our long-standing rivalry against North Melbourne.
The Tiger Army won’t forget the legendary farewell of Richmond greats Jack Riewoldt and Trent Cotchin in Round 23 of the 2023 season against the Kangaroos.
The pair couldn’t have had a more fitting send-off, as the side defeated North in front of the Tiger faithful at the MCG by 29-points.
Former Richmond captain and three-time premiership player, Cotchin, fought hard to get himself back into the side for his farewell match after recovering from a calf injury weeks prior.
The Tiger great turned back the clock one final time and left the MCG with 18 disposals, four clearances and three marks.
It was no surprise that fellow three-time premiership player and former vice-captain, Riewoldt, was able to slot one more goal in his final game, finishing with a huge 787 goals across his 347-game career with Richmond.
Riewoldt finished his career as Richmond’s third-highest goal scorer, sitting behind Matthew Richardson (800 goals) and Jack Titus (970 goals).
Immortalised by the Tiger Army, Cotchin and Riewoldt did one final lap around the MCG where they received a standing ovation and cheers from those who had supported them throughout their careers.
On September 28, 1974, Richmond took home its ninth premiership after beating the Kangaroos by a dominant 41-point margin to make claim to back-to-back flags.
The match saw 111,839 spectators flock to the MCG to see the minor premiers face a North Melbourne outfit who finished second on the ladder.
Richmond made its third consecutive Grand Final appearance and were fresh from finishing on top of the ladder, where they recorded 17 wins and five losses.
Key forward Barry Richardson had a day out, kicking five goals while fellow forward Royce Hart kicked three of his own.
Hart was also named best on ground, recognised for his on-field brilliance, where he finished with 22 disposals.
The historic day was the first Grand Final to be videotaped and telecast in colour.
