Tom Lynch has been handed a five-match suspension by the AFL Tribunal.

Richmond contested the grading of severe impact for the charge of striking Adelaide's Jordon Butts in the second term of Sunday's match.

The AFL argued that regardless of whether Lynch had a closed fist or open hand, the forcefulness of his swing had potential to cause injury to Butts.

The grading remained as intentional conduct, severe impact and high contact.

Lynch will be next available for selection in Richmond's Round 22 clash with St Kilda at the MCG.
