Noah Balta

Fresh off an 11-point win over West Coast, Richmond coach Adem Yze has lauded the impact made by Noah Balta and Seth Campbell, who both continue to grow in new roles.

Balta earned praise from Yze for his immediate impact in the ruck and his ability to hit the scoreboard up forward.

The 25-year-old finished the game with 20 disposals, 18 contested possessions, six clearances and three goals. He was the highest rated player across the competition last weekend, via Champion Data.

“We knew what he could do, but we hadn’t tried it with the new ruck rule and the things around the centre bounce, so out of necessity we had to throw him in there,” Yze told SEN about Balta's refreshed role.

“He gave us the first look and a really potent extra midfielder when it hits the deck...we have been searching for that.

“The last couple of weeks he has really hit his straps and shown some great leadership.

“He’s got his competitive nature where he wants to jump in and impact, but we just have to coach him through it. He just wants to help this footy club, help his teammates, and he played a terrific game.”

With Balta hitting his stride as a ruckman, Yze is confident that when Toby Nankervis makes his way back from injury, the duo will form a strong combination across the ground.

“The other thing he did do was give us a fairly good contest forward of the ball,” Yze said.

“When Nank comes back, we could have a nice combination with those two, and it might give us an opportunity to play Noah forward a bit more.”

Exciting young forward Campbell is also coming into his own after extended midfield minutes, offering a burst of speed and elite skills at centre bounce.

Combined with his goal awareness, Campbell is shortly becoming a dominant force who can play across both positions. It is a skill set that Yze hopes to utilise more as he gains further midfield minutes.

“Whether it's permanent midfield or just some centre bounce access...he's had some access this pre-season, and a few of the earlier games, so he will do that, and he'll hopefully get some opportunity to go through there again this weekend,” Yze said of Campbell.

“That is a natural progression, a high-forward, high-impact. Seth's got some high talent and the capability to do so.

“We'll give him that exposure, and we're looking forward to him doing that. His form on the weekend and this season has been outstanding.

“We want to give access to a lot of our younger players through there, and we will do so.”

With Richmond now having claimed its first win of the season, the Tigers will look to carry that momentum into this Sunday’s clash with an in-form Adelaide outfit at the MCG.

That's what you play for. You play to win," Yze said.

“Obviously, staying at the hotel after the game and sitting around, having dinner together and watching the boys mingle and connect, and obviously a long flight home is better after a win.

“We've got through our review and got some learnings from it, some positives, and there's some things that weren't good enough.

“We're looking at one of the best teams in the comp in Adelaide, coming over here and playing at our ground."
