Dual Richmond premiership forward Tom Lynch will reach the 250-game milestone in Saturday’s clash with St Kilda at the MCG.

Lynch has made an enormous impact at the Tigers after joining the Club from the Gold Coast Suns at the end of the 2018 season.

The 33-year-old has a Richmond accomplishments list that ticks all the boxes, including two premiership medals (2019, 2020), a Jack Dyer Medal (2022), an All-Australian Squad member (2022), two Michael Roach Medals (2019, 2022), a Kevin Bartlett Medal (2019) and Richmond Life Membership.

"It's very exciting to play 250 games, it’s an old cliche, but everyone says when you get drafted you just want to play one game, so to play 250 is very special," Lynch said.

500 Goals for Lynch!

From his first AFL goal to his 500th, relive the moments that have defined Tom Lynch's remarkable career.

Lynch was recruited by the Suns from Talent League team Dandenong Stingrays with pick 11 in the 2010 AFL national draft.

He would play 131 games for Gold Coast and win the Suns leading goalkicker award four times (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017), two Suns Best and Fairest awards (2015, 2016), co-captain in 2017-2018 and earn his All-Australian blazer in 2016.

At the end of the 2018 season, Lynch joined Richmond as a restricted free agent, having an impressive, instant impact at his new football home.

With the Tigers’ gun key forward Jack Riewoldt sidelined for a significant portion of the 2019 home-and-away season due to injury, Lynch stepped up to fill the void in superb style.

He won Richmond’s leading goalkicking award that year with 63 goals, including five in a pivotal preliminary final performance against Geelong that significantly helped the Tigers clinch a second Grand Final berth since 2017.

Lynch was a valuable contributor for Richmond in its 2019 Grand Final demolition of GWS, taking seven marks and booting two goals.

"The history of the year before for Richmond, the best team in it, and then obviously losing that prelim, so the group was really determined not to let that happen again," Lynch said of the 2019 flag.

"It was my first finals series, so I was just really looking forward to being part of September action. It was an amazing finals series and you dream of playing on Grand Final day and to get there and win a premiership, you just pinch yourself.

Tom Lynch reflects on his first finals series and winning the 2019 premiership.

"I remember having a shot, start of the third quarter, we missed a couple of goals and sort of felt like we were letting them back in, and I remember Dustin [Martin] came up to me and said, just kick the goal, with a few more expletives than that. So that was good to put a lot of pressure on me, and I went back and kicked it.

"I remember the last quarter where we sort of knew that we were actually going to win the game…just really soaking in that last sort of 10 minutes was amazing."

A second premiership medal was hanging around Lynch’s neck the following year, when the Tigers downed Geelong in an historic night Grand Final at the Gabba.

"We weren't playing amazing, but we were sort of grinding out wins here and there," Lynch said of the 2020 campaign.

"It felt like we got to the end of it, it's like ‘we've been up here so long, we really need to make this count and finish off memorably’. That last month, you could really tell the sort of group change to, it is business time, we need to go."

Earlier this year, Lynch would boot his 500th AFL goal, a testament to his attacking power and consistency throughout his career. 

Lynch’s current goal total sits at 504, with 254 of them coming at Gold Coast and 250 at Richmond.

Now in the latter stages of his career, Lynch has been labelled the “godfather” of the forward line by coach Adem Yze.

Lynch explained how mentoring and guiding the crop of young Tiger forwards, including Jonty Faull, Harry Armstrong, Tom Sims and others, is an exciting role and one he has embraced.

"It's an exciting group coming through, the guys are really working hard and the potential in these young guys is exciting for everyone to see," Lynch said.

"To play alongside them and help them at the start of their career [is exciting] and hopefully see the fruits of that for the years to come. 

"They’ve got a lot of talent and things like that, but they're all just humble and they want to get better and they just want to win games for this footy club, so that's the best attribute you can get."
