After an epic weekend of preliminary final matches, Richmond’s VWFL Community Division team secured their place in the Grand Final after a thrilling three-point win over Collingwood.

The Community Division executed an inspired comeback, trailing by 18 points heading into the last quarter.

Mark Titford had a day out scoring seven goals, whilst Bryant Parsons had one of his own.

First-year player Bianca Meo was solid once again, with strong leads and taking on the defensive forward role.

Championship team Captain James Weinert praised the Community team’s impressive comeback and is encouraging everyone to get behind them, as they take on Essendon in the Grand Final this Sunday.

“It was an unbelievable comeback,” Weinert said.

“I think it was 30 to 53 at three-quarter time, and then they kicked four straight goals to win, so be here to watch them.

“It’s super exciting. We are two teams but one Club, so we are still alive in a sense and can’t wait to see them have a crack at it.”

The final score reflected Richmond 8.8 (56) to Collingwood 8.5 (53).

The Community Division will need the support of the Tiger Army this Sunday as they take on Essendon at La Trobe University, Court 2, from 1:00pm. Entry is FREE.

Unfortunately for the Club’s Championship Division, the Tigers fell short to Hawthorn by just 17 points. Despite taking a one-point lead at half-time, the Hawks proved too strong in the third and fourth quarters, taking home the victory.

Despite the loss, Weinert took positives from the season and hopes to bounce back stronger next year.

“Overall, I’m pretty pleased with how we played,” he said.

“Any time you’re minor premiers, you can look back proud on your season, but straight-set finals wasn’t what we wanted.

“It’s a huge privilege to be selected by your teammates (as captain). It’s an honour, and I hope I did the role proud even though we weren’t able to hold the cup up on the last day.”

The final score reflected Richmond 7.6 (48) to Hawthorn 10.5 (65).
