AFL legend and pioneer of the Dreamtime game, Kevin Sheedy, has lauded the launch of Dreamtime at Maali.

It was announced on Wednesday that Richmond and Essendon football clubs will write a new chapter in the history of the Dreamtime game, joining with Tourism Western Australia and the AFL to establish Dreamtime at Maali as part of a new two-year partnership.

The inaugural Dreamtime at Maali will be hosted by Essendon and played in Perth next year on the Sunday of NAIDOC Week, July 4, creating a new platform to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, community and contribution to Australian football.

Sheedy, who is a three-time Richmond premiership player and four-time Essendon premiership coach, believes the expansion of the significant occasion is a positive step.

"I think it's great because it's a great educational tool about the Aboriginal people's history of Australia and this has been a great learning procedure through football and through the AFL," Sheedy said on SEN.

"I think it's a great idea and a great option and I think both clubs should be congratulated...I think it's so important that we keep working at these sort of games."
