The AFL has announced the final round of the VFL home and away season has been cancelled, bringing the VFL Tigers' 2021 campaign to a close.

This comes as a result of the evolving COVID-19 situation across the country, previous interruptions to scheduled games, and an extension to the Victorian State Government lockdown.

With not all teams having played the same amount of games, the league has confirmed a match ratio system has determined the final ladder positions ahead of the 2021 VFL Finals Series starting in September 4.

The finals will retain the top eight clubs but in an elimination format. Should they be able to start on the weekend of September 4, minor premier Footscray will meet GWS (eighth), Southport (second) will play Collingwood (seventh), Box Hill Hawks (third) will be up against Williamstown (sixth) and Geelong (fourth) will face Casey Demons (fifth) in sudden-death showdowns.

The four winners will meet in the preliminary finals for a spot in the VFL Grand Final to be played at Marvel Stadium on Sunday, September 19.

A further week's delay would see the fifth to eighth placed teams eliminated and the top four would play off for a spot in the decider.

Richmond has finished in 11th position on the 2021 VFL ladder, following 10 games which consisted of four wins, five losses and one draw. Having finished outside the top eight, the 2019 premiers won't be playing in the finals series.
