As tigers have unique stripes, they can be identified through photographs of their flanks. When individual tigers can be identified, it is possible to estimate the population size of these animals within the area being studied.

Camera trap images reveal information on tiger ecology, which can then help to provide solutions to managing their habitat. It tracks the activity patterns of tigers, leopards and their prey. Based on these behavioural patterns, researchers can develop recommendations on reducing conflicts between tigers and the local human population.

In November 2021, data from 112 camera trap locations were collected. More than 500,000 images are being processed to identify species. Based on preliminary individual identification exercises, there are at least 12 individual tigers in Royal Belum State Park, including a juvenile tiger which was photographed along with its mother, and a mother with two cubs.
