Tom Lynch has polled the most Brownlow Medal votes in a season by a key Richmond forward since Matthew Richardson.

The dual Tiger premiership star, who kicked 63 goals this season, picked up a career-high 14 votes in the 2022 Brownlow count despite missing four games through injury, and being subbed out of the Round 17 match against Gold Coast at Metricon Stadium during the first quarter with a hamstring issue.

Lynch’s previous best Brownlow result in a season was 11 with the Suns in 2016.

Richardson received 16 votes in the 1999 season after booting 67 goals.

He subsequently finished third in the 2008 Brownlow Medal with 22 votes but spent much of that season playing as a wingman.

Several other Tiger players achieved Brownlow personal bests in the 2022 count. They were:

Shai Bolton – 12 votes (previous best was nine in 2020).

Liam Baker – six votes (previous best three in 2020).

Jayden Short – six votes (previous best three in 2020).

Noah Balta – two votes (previous best one in 2020).

Marlion Pickett – two votes (never polled previously).

Nathan Broad – one vote (never polled previously).

Bewildering, however, is the fact that Daniel Rioli, who had a superb season in his new rebounding role across half-back and is one of the top chances for the 2022 Jack Dyer Medal, failed to poll a single vote.
