The only other time an Australian federal election was held on May 18 occurred in 1974.

Saturday, May 18, 1974 also happened to be the day that all hell broke loose at half-time of the Richmond v Essendon clash at Windy Hill, as the players were leaving the field.

Players and officials of both sides traded blows, with hefty suspensions subsequently handed down by the VFL.

The Windy Hill Brawl, as it was dubbed, was voted Richmond's biggest controversy of the century in the Club's 2008 league football centenary celebrations.

Richmond won the match by 10 points and the ALP won the election by five seats.
