Another outstanding performance from star Richmond midfielder Tim Taranto has propelled him into equal-third place in the AFL Coaches Association’s Champion Player of the Year Award.

Taranto received the maximum 10 votes for the huge impact he had in the Tigers’ Round 14 victory over St Kilda at the MCG last Saturday night.

He finished the match with a game-high and equal AFL career-high 38 disposals, game-high 18 contested possessions, game-high 10 tackles, four inside-50s, six clearances, one goal (the sealer), four score involvements, four intercepts and 411 metres gained.

The 25-year-old, prized Richmond recruit from Greater Western Sydney has polled a staggering 46 coaches votes since Round 8 for an overall total of 62 votes, which is one off second place and just 14 away from the leader, Port Adelaide’s Zac Butters.

Tigers champion Trent Cotchin, who celebrated his AFL 300-game milestone in superb style with 29 disposals, 15 contested possessions, four marks, five inside-50s, five clearances, including a game-high four centre clearances, two goals, seven score involvements, seven intercepts, five tackles and 491 metres gained, was given eight votes.

Dustin Martin – 35 disposals, 11 contested possessions, a game-high eight inside-50s, six clearances, an equal game-high eight score involvements, three intercepts, three tackles and 514 metres gained – picked up six votes, while Nick Vlastuin – 23 disposals, a game-high nine marks, game-high 11 intercepts, six rebound-50s, one goal, three score involvements and 466 metres gained – collected four votes.

Rounding out Richmond’s Round 14 vote-winners in the prestigious coaches’ award is Shai Bolton with one vote.
