Richmond is proud to unveil its 2025 Dreamtime guernsey, which has been designed by the Mansell family, Clyde, Brett, and Rhyan, and tells their story and the story of their Country, lumaranatana down to larapuna.
Richmond player Rhyan Mansell, his father Brett, his grandfather Clyde, and the Mansell family, are proud pakana people of north-eastern lutruwita (Tasmania). The mutton bird, also known as the moon bird, features on the front of the guernsey, symbolising the connection to the local community.
The mutton bird would migrate to as far as Alaska and return to Tasmania and the Antarctic Circle for breeding season. Mutton birds nest underground, and at one point in time, Tasmania and its surrounding islands contained an estimated 11.5 million burrows.
The sash on the guernsey also features the flock, the land and water, and the fire and smoke.
The smaller mutton birds flying in a flock symbolises unity and cultural connection of mob. The land masses depict the islands of tayaritja including truwana and lungtalanana, surrounded by the waves of the ocean, while the bright, sparking fire and cloudy smoke represent the traditional land management practice of cultural burning.
On the back of the guernsey, the handprints represent the Richmond players having each other’s backs, on and off the field. The placement depicts the act of patting a teammate’s shoulder, while the application is a traditional spraying technique using ochre to stencil around the hand.
Below the number there are four mutton birds flying over the Furneaux Islands - lungtalanana, truwana and Flinders Island. The islands are where Clyde Mansell grew up and where the Mansell family originates from, while the birds represent Rhyan, Brett, Clyde and the Richmond playing group.
The guernsey ends with two key features from the family. The minungkana (yellow tail black cockatoo) is the Mansell family totem, and is placed next to the below statement that is written on the back of the guernsey:
This guernsey tells our story and the story of our Country – lumaranatana down to larapuna.
We are pakana people of north-eastern lutruwita (Tasmania).
Our totem is the minungkana (yellow tail black cockatoo).
