Richmond’s strong VWFL seasons have ended on a sour note, with the Championship and Community teams losing their Grand Final games on Sunday.
Aiming for their third straight premiership, the Championship side fell to St Kilda, 17.7 (109) to 10.6 (66), while the Community team lost to Essendon, 11.6 (72) to 6.6 (42).
The Saints got the jump in the Championship Grand Final, entering the first break with a 20-2 advantage. While the Tigers would continue to fight all game, St Kilda maintained its ascendancy throughout the contest to win the premiership.
Chris Kotsanas and Angelo Mavroudis both recorded four goals in solid performances for Richmond. Kotsanas scored his 100th goal for the season in the clash, an incredible achievement for the Tigers superstar.
A slow start also doomed the Community team, as Essendon notched seven goals to one in the first quarter and never relented throughout the game.
Mark Titford had four goals for the Tigers, while Bryant Parsons added two.
Despite the defeats, Richmond’s VWFL teams both enjoyed outstanding campaigns and will now begin preparations to go one better next season.
