Sam Grlj

Richmond draftee Sam Grlj has been confirmed as the Club's first debutant of the 2026 season, set to pull on the jumper against the Blues at the MCG on Thursday night.

The running-machine, who was selected with pick eight in the 2025 AFL Draft, has proven himself over the pre-season at the Swinburne Centre, given the call up for the Round 1 blockbuster.

The 18-year-old has already impressed with his leadership and voice on-field, becoming key attributes that have allowed him to stand out over the summer.

During Richmond's practice matches against Essendon and Melbourne, Grlj was electric across half back, unafraid to break lines and deliver the ball to the most viable option he could find.

Namely, against the Bombers, Grlj was able to deliver a super-skilled pass to Sam Cumming, who found the goals shortly after.

The speedster averaged 20.3 disposals, 5.0 tackles and 3.9 clearances at Coates Talent League level in 2025, and 17 touches for Victoria Metro.

Grlj also impressed when playing for Richmond’s VFL team in Round 19 and 20 last season, instantly standing out as a top-level talent.

The teenager was voted as the captain of the Vic Metro U18 side last year, as well as captaining his school side at Camberwell Grammar.

The 182cm Canterbury product was used mostly in the midfield and across half back last season, with expectations he will utilise his speed against Carlton on Thursday night.

Grlj will pull on the jumper for the first time when Richmond takes on Carlton at the MCG on Thursday night at 7.30pm (AEDT).
