Richmond coach Adem Yze has provided a further update on veteran duo Nick Vlastuin and Dion Prestia ahead of Saturday’s home opener against the Gold Coast Suns.
Both Vlastuin and Prestia are available for selection, after missing the Round 1 clash with Carlton, and Yze discussed their status before Wednesday morning’s main training session.
“We've got our main session today, so get through that, touch wood,” Yze said.
“Nick, we took a really cautious approach with, he was physically able to play last week, it was just more of a training load, so we got a few extra sessions into him just to make sure we set him up for a good season.
“Dion was sort of touch and go last week, but it was just a little bit too risky, so same sort of thing, 10 days, or three extra sessions, that we could get into them.
“This is obviously the last one (they) have to tick off today. To have two of our best leaders out on the field on the weekend will be handy, so hopefully they get through today.”
Vlastuin is coming off a sensational 2025 campaign where he made the All-Australian squad, while Prestia played the last 12 games of last season, showcasing his strong leadership and averaging 23 disposals, his most since 2022.
Yze said managing Prestia, to ensure he has an impactful season, is at the front of mind.
“Being really smart with the way that we manage him leading into his first game, I think is really important,” Yze said.
“We're hoping that ends up being the same scenario, that he does get a good block of games.
“He's such an important player. Not only his output that he does with the ball, but without the ball and his leadership, and our young blokes can't wait for him to be out there with them.”
