Richmond fell short in Round 2 of the VFL, outclassed by a hungrier Coburg side on Saturday afternoon.

The Lions came out with a ferocious attack on the contest, starting well through Jaidyn Stephenson as he slotted his first major of the day. The Tigers bounced back though rebounding the ball out of their back half, all the way up the field with Tom Ferguson finding space inside-50 and kicking a goal.

Moments later Joel Trudgeon pounced on a Richmond turnover in defensive-50, giving Coburg back the lead, before Ferguson kicked his second with a classy snap.

Stephenson burst into space and ran into an open goal in the dying stages of the first quarter, giving the Lions a five-point lead at quarter-time.

Things only got better for Coburg with the first two goals of the second term, coming from small forwards Kyle Weightman and Levy Tejones.

After defending repeated inside-50s, Noah Roberts-Thomson broke the shackles, bursting through the stoppage and kicking an important goal for the Tigers just before the half-time break.

Coburg controlled the inside-50 count in the first half and soon had the lead out to three goals after a classy finish from Mitch Podhajski, but the Tigers responded with a goal to Liam Fawcett.

The Lions kicked two goals to one from that point onwards, taking a handy 14-point lead into the last quarter.

Down on the scoreboard, the Tigers pressed early in the last term but Podhajski got the all-important first goal, his third to push the lead out to 19 points. Ryan Valentine kicked his first minutes later, giving Coburg a four-goal lead eight minutes into the last quarter.

Ferguson kept Richmond alive after a deliberate rushed behind decision on the goal line, going back and kicking his third goal of the day.

But approaching time on Stephenson kicked his third of the day and sealed victory for Coburg, up by 23 points with just four minutes left to play. The Tigers fought right until the end but ultimately fell short, going down 12.15 (87) to 9.10 (64).

Youngsters Ferguson and Zane Peucker kicked three each and looked lively in front of the footy throughout the day, while Podhajski was on target for Coburg kicking four goals.
