Paddy Carr

Richmond has signed 217cm former basketball player Patrick Carr to its AFL list as a Category B Rookie.

Carr joins the Tigers after playing college basketball for the University of Texas at Tyler. He appeared in 11 games in the 2024/25 season and another four in 2025/26, while also studying Business Management.

The 20-year-old returned to his hometown, Melbourne, two months ago and has since decided to pursue his AFL dream. Carr grew up playing both football and basketball, having last played football for Banyule at U14 level.

At 217cm, Carr will become the tallest player in AFL history and will officially begin at the Tigers after the bye week.

Paddy Carr

"We are delighted to welcome Paddy to Richmond,” Richmond’s National Recruiting Manager, Rhy Gieschen, said.

"He’s an exciting young athlete, having had some experience playing football as a junior before focusing on pursuing his basketball career in America.

"He showed some real improvement in the trials he had with us in his football fundamentals. He’s a great size and shape for our game and we see some real upside in him.

"Our primary focus with Paddy will be introducing him back into football and preparing his body for the rigours of our game before slowly introducing him into training and potentially games later in the year.

"We are taking a long-term approach with him and are extremely delighted to watch his development and improvement.

"Most importantly, he has been a great person through the process and extremely eager to get started at Tigerland.”
