Richmond's VFL team went down by 12 points at the hands of Frankston on Friday night, in tough conditions.
Coach Jack Madgen has provided an overview of each players' Round 6 performance.
Noah Roberts-Thomson (11 disposals, 5 tackles, 2 marks)
"Noah had a little bit of a different role this week. It was a tough day for the high forwards to get involved. Sometimes it can be a bit of feast or famine at Frankston. I am liking the way Noah is adding to his game, and the willingness to play new roles. He needs to keep working on his craft and finish opportunities when they're provided to him."
Samson Ryan (1 goal, 20 disposals, 34 hitouts, 4 clearances)
"I thought Samson was good back at the VFL level. He got plenty of the ball, competed really hard in the ruck against a pretty good ruck for Frankston, hit the scoreboard and looked really strong in the air, in front and behind the footy. I thought his attitude was second-to-none. We will need him to lead the way with composure with the young group we have at VFL level at the moment."
Liam Fawcett (2 goals, 7 disposals, 3 marks)
"It was a bit of a tough day for forwards in general. Although we had enough opportunities, we just didn’t take enough of them. Liam was able to kick a couple of goals. He was able to get his hands to the ball in a lot of aerial contests, but just wasn't able to capitalise. I'd love, especially at the VFL level, when he gets his hands on the footy in a marking contest, that he gobbles them up, because that's what's expected of him, and that's what will help him get back up to the AFL."
Austin Johnson (17 disposals, 6 marks, 5 tackles)
"I thought Austin got off to a really good start. His first half was really good, playing on the wing. We're a better team when the footy is in his hands. So, we need to keep finding ways for him to impact on offence, because his defensive patterns are really strong."
Mohammed Yassine (1 goal, 9 disposals, 4 tackles)
"Moey was pretty lively as a forward. We love playing him in impactful bursts so he can bring his strengths which is his speed. He got on the end of a goal and probably had a few opportunities to square a few others up. I thought he played his role on the day."
Joel Garner (1 goal, 18 disposals, 4 tackles)
"It was another really strong performance by Joel. He had a few really big contests in defence, put his body on the line. His leadership is something we need down there, and his ball use is good. He kicked a really nice goal in the first quarter, and got us going early in the game."
Harry Scott (22 disposals, 7 tackles, 7 clearances)
"Scotty was pretty good on the day, although I thought Frankston's midfield got on top of ours by the end of the game. Harry is so clean and his craft is really strong. He needs to keep working on speed and power as a midfielder. He could add a change of gears to take his game to the next level."
Lachlan Street (25 disposals, 7 clearances, 6 tackles)
"Street used the ball pretty well and took some timely marks behind the ball as a midfielder. His challenge in team defence is to stay up with the game and not fold back. When the team can control the ball a bit better and give our midfielders, like Lachie, a chance to catch up to our offence, he is a better player for it."
Zaydyn Lockwood (9 disposals, 4 marks)
"We challenged Zaydyn during the week to stay a little bit more attached as a defender. He's only young and in his first year of senior footy, so he's getting better every week. He's adding to his craft and still has got a lot to learn, but playing alongside the likes of Mutaz El Nour and Joel Garner is helping his game. He had his hands full with a few big key forwards for Frankston, so I hope he took a lot out of the game, because we need to continually help him get better."
Tom McKenzie (21 disposals, 13 kicks, 7 marks)
"Tom played a really good game after a challenging week. He played as a half-back, as a bit more of a lockdown back this week, and his contest was really strong. He used the ball well out of defence. He needs to have a bit more composure when he wins the ball back on our last line of defence."
Olli Hotton (25 disposals, 4 clearances, 3 tackles)
"Frankston's midfield on the day probably got on top of ours, but Olli's ability to get out the front of stoppage and his calmness with ball in hand was a standout. Like a few others out there, he needs to keep tipping into the defensive aspect of the game, and two-way running."
Nick Collier (17 disposals, 6 marks, 4 tackles)
"Nick was pretty good again on the day, and his toughness was really impressive. I love seeing that as a coach. He had a bit of a job on one of their dangerous small forwards after the first quarter, and I thought he did well. In offence, he needs to keep using his numbers and have more composure, as he wins the ball back a lot on our last line of defence."
Dan Lowther (1 goal, 6 hitouts, 3 tackles)
"Dan competed hard in the air as young key forward. He has still got plenty to learn, but when he's taking the footy at the highest point, getting a run and jump at it, he's really strong. Dan can keep working on his game sense and his ability to get up and down the ground. I love the way he competes in the ruck as well. His challenge is finding other ways to impact games when he's not always clunking marks."
Ry Cantwell (6 disposals, 2 clearances, 1 tackle)
"It was Ry's first game for the year. He had to play out a little bit deeper in defence than where we would have liked him to play. He had some really good moments with ball in hand, but probably just didn't see enough of it on the whole. I love his speed and power and we need him to keep bringing that behind the footy."
Liam George (16 disposals, 3 marks)
"The dimensions of Frankston probably makes it a bit harder for the winger to find plenty of the ball. I thought he had some great trademark moments, but it probably wasn't one of George's best. We need to help him find his feet and power again in the coming weeks."
Sam Toner (1 goal, 11 disposals, 2 marks)
"Sam had his chances on goal, but just didn't capitalise as much as he has in previous weeks. I thought it was one of his better defensive games. He chased out really hard and found himself in defensive 50 a couple times, making a play. He’s trying a little bit too hard out there, which sounds funny, but he was playing really well in the first couple rounds because he was executing the basics really well. He's got some tricks up the ground. He's got some wheels, so we need to get him up and down the ground a bit more, to give us better shape, and he will have bigger impacts on games."
Mutaz El Nour (24 disposals, 10 marks, 5 tackles)
"After a slow start for Mutaz, I thought he had a great last three quarters. His intercept marking ability is really strong. He works back really well to make some big plays for us, when it looks like the opposition will score. His ball use is solid, and I would love for him to explore a bit more to get our ball movement going. Again, I thought he proved why he's the best defender in the competition. He had 14 intercept possessions, which is what you should be basing your game off as a key defender."
Leo Connolly (11 disposals, 9 kicks, 3 marks)
"Leo played on the wing and half-back. His two contested marks on the day were awesome for an attacking half-back. He was improved in the contest. There's still a couple of times I would love him just to body line the footy on the ground, run through and take the ball. So it's one that we've been working on with Leo. His intent to defend, then use the ball back going the other way, was solid."
Sam Philp (23 disposals, 1 goal, 7 tackles, 5 clearances)
"This wasn't the best of Philp that we know we can get. He will always give you his all, so it's not a question on his intent or his effort. That's always at or above the level. He kicked a really nice goal early in the game, but probably had a chance to square one or two others up. I'm sure when we show him what he can fix, it’ll be an easy change to make."
Tom Ferguson (14 disposals, 5 kicks, 1 tackle)
"On a tough day for the high forwards, Ferguson had a few opportunities to take the ball clean, but needs to find that next level. So it’s a really easy fix, and Tom will have a clear focus for training this week. When he is up and going, we are a hard team to beat."
Ned Renfree (1 goal, 8 disposals, 4 marks)
"A bit like our other forwards, Ned found it pretty hard to compete against Frankston's big key defenders. He kicked a nice goal, but we lacked that forward pressure that we need out of him. He’s a young player and made some some really good decisions with ball in hand. We'll keep educating Ned, because he's got a few weapons that not many other people have. It's just about going out there, and bridging that gap from his best footy and when he’s finding it hard."
Zane Greenham (10 disposals, 1 tackle, 1 clearance)
"It was Zane’s first game and I though he brought heaps of energy, flushed a few crumbs, had a few goal assists and set up two or three goals, which was awesome to see. I thought he played the right way. He made the right decisions with ball in hand most of the time. He also had a massive defensive effort, running the whole length of the ground just to stop a goal."
Aaron Sharkie (19 disposals, 4 marks, 1 tackle)
"Sharkie was solid again in his second game. He was clean and used the ball pretty well. He is still finding the balance between being an aggressive high back, and having a defensive focus. We need Sharkie to hunt the ball more when we are in slow play offence, at the right times, so we can move the ball better. We need to keep educating him on positioning as a higher defender, and that'll help him get more of the footy."
