There’s no higher praise for Richmond’s dependable defender Dylan Grimes than to compare his last-quarter efforts against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval last Saturday as Alex Rance-like.

Grimes, who returned to the Tigers’ line-up following a one-match suspension handed down by the Match Review Officer, produced a defensive master class during the frenetic final term, taking six strong marks and picking up nine disposals to repeatedly repel the Power’s attacking thrusts, thereby ensuring a mighty victory for the undermanned visitors.

He finished the match with 17 disposals, including 13 contested possessions, an equal game-high six rebound-50s, seven marks, six spoils and a game-high 13 intercepts.

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick lauded Grimes’s performance during his post-match press conference.

“His last 10-12 minutes was terrific,” Hardwick said.

“He’s been a wonderful player for us for a long time, but that was as significant a period as I think he’s played.

“I thought he won the match for us, really.”
