Richmond has made two changes for Sunday’s Round 8 clash with Fremantle at Optus Stadium.

Defensive duo David Astbury and Ryan Garthwaite come into the line-up, replacing injured premiership pair Nick Vlastuin (rolled ankle) and Daniel Rioli (corked quad/general soreness).

Astbury missed last Saturday night’s loss to the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium because of a rolled ankle he sustained in the Round 6 victory over Melbourne, while Garthwaite has been recalled for his second senior match this season.

Garthwaite’s previous game at AFL level in 2019 was against Greater Western Sydney at Giants Stadium in Round 3.

Since then, the determined, young defender has performed strongly with Richmond’s VFL team.

He played a valuable role in the VFL Tigers’ decisive victory over Williamstown last weekend, prompting coach Craig McRae to comment in his weekly players’ form review on richmondfc.com.au: “Defended extremely well, was hard to play on and had six rebound-50s. Is playing AFL footy at VFL level, and his eight spoils led the team.”

Richmond’s four emergencies for Sunday’s match are Ivan Soldo, Riley Collier-Dawkins, Jake Aarts and Dan Butler.
