Richmond took its first opportunity for a hit out against opposition with both hands, taking on North Melbourne at Waverley Park on Wednesday afternoon.

The first quarter was a tight tussle, with the Tigers keeping pace with the reigning premiers, while also working to create chain movement up the lines.

The full-on footy that has been coming to life during pre-season was on display, with the immense pressure paying off, as Charli Wicksteed got on the end of a team-effort run on, kicking Richmond's first of the day in the opening term.

Libby Graham, Montana Beruldsen and Kate Dempsey were ferocious with their tackling pressure, while veteran Katie Brennan got her hands to the ball six times in the opening term and calmed the side down.

Trailing by just seven points at the first break, the Tigers continued to look for ways through traffic, and work through their new and improved end-to-end game style.

No. 1 draftee Olivia Wolmarans showed her physical growth, laying bumps and tackles inside forward 50 during the second term. Meantime, Monique Conti continued to shine with her inside-50 entries.

Laura McClelland was impressive deep in defence, stopping two likely Roos goals late in the second quarter.

The third term saw a quick start, with Emelia Yassir and Georgia Stubs working hard to intercept and create options inside-50.

North Melbourne took control of the scoreboard in the third, kicking five goals to Richmond's one, but it didn't deter the hard running from Baia Pugh, who created chaos with her ferocious tackling prowess.

A late third-quarter surge saw Mackenzie Ford get on the end of a brilliant transition play, cleanly picking the ball up outside 50 and streaming in with her blistering pace to add Richmond's second of the game.

The Tigers' intensity lifted again in the last quarter, with pressure from co-captain Ellie McKenzie causing a turnover inside forward 50, with Beruldsen streaming to her aid, laying another of her four tackles for the match.

Brennan sat back deep in defence in aid of Graham and Beth Lynch, taking two crucial marks to stop the run on from North Melbourne, and reducing the Roos to just four inside-50s in the final term.

Richmond will take on Melbourne at Casey Fields next Friday 17 July, from 12.35pm (AEST), in the second match simulation of the pre-season.
