Toby Nankervis

Richmond captain Toby Nankervis has made a strong return to the playing field following a three-month lay-off with a severe hamstring injury.

In seven games since coming back into the Tigers’ team, Nankervis is averaging 16.0 disposals, 10.0 contested possessions, 6.0 clearances and 25.1 hit-outs.

He was at his robust, spirited, inspirational best in Richmond’s thrilling Round 21 win against West Coast at the MCG, with impressive match statistics of 19 disposals, a team-high 15 contested possessions, one goal, five clearances, five score involvements, three intercepts, four tackles and 31 hit-outs.

The triple Tiger premiership ruckman, who turns 32 next week, told Fox Footy in a post-game interview that the Club’s exciting group of young players had rejuvenated him, and he has no plans of hanging up his boots.

“I love playing with Sam Cumming and Taj (Hotton) and Sammy (Lalor). They’re great young men and they’re going to be stars of the future,” Nankervis said.

“I’m just enjoying as much as I’ve got left. I’m not sure how much, but I’m soaking it up, definitely.

“My body feels really good. I’m going to hang on for as long as I can with these young boys, who I’m absolutely loving.

“I love rocking up to the Club every day. I’ve got the best job in the world, so I’m going to play for as long as I can.”

Nankervis also paid tribute to Richmond coach Adem Yze.

“’Ooze’ has been unbelievable. The way he shows up to the Club on a Monday, win, lose or draw, he’s so consistent and he lays a great platform for the rest of us,” he said.
