After two ACL injuries and extensive rehabilitation, Montana McKinnon secured her first win in the Yellow and Black as the side claimed a 15-point victory over the Saints on the weekend.
In just her third appearance for Richmond across the last three seasons, McKinnon returned as a defender, having primarily played in the ruck throughout her career.
“It's been three years in the making, so it feels pretty good that we managed to get it done over the four quarters,” McKinnon said post-game.
The 25-year-old stood tall down back, finishing with a game-high seven intercepts, the most of any Richmond player on the field.
“I felt confident from the get-go. (Playing) a new position today down back, so lots of nerves coming into the game, but really good to tick that one off and get the win,” McKinnon said.
Co-captain Ellie McKenzie also starred in her 50th AFLW game and first of the season, returning from an arm injury.
McKenzie picked up where she left off last season, finishing the hit out with 20 disposals, five clearances and 405 metres gained.
“It’s very nice to have Ellie back and have her play her first game for us for the year”, Coach Jarred Donders said post-game.
“To present the way she did and to contribute the way she did, I know she is very pleased.
“It was a big milestone game for her, which has been a long time coming, and I’m really proud we could get the job done for her today, for someone who is really respected in our four walls.”
Richmond will turn its focus to Round 6, where they will travel to Canberra's Corroboree Group Oval to face the Giants this Sunday.
