Richmond is pleased to announce its newest accolade, the Steve Morris Award, which will be presented to the VFL player who best embodies the Club's values, trademarks and standards.
The award is named after former Richmond player and VFL premiership captain Steve Morris. He captained the Tigers to the VFL flag in 2019, while holding the captaincy from 2018-2021.
Like the AFL’s Francis Bourke Award, the VFL playing group will vote for the Steve Morris Award recipient and present it to the individual who best embodies the Club's values, trademarks and standards.
Richmond CEO Shane Dunne announced the award to both the VFL and AFL playing groups earlier this year, explaining what it means to be the recipient, praising Morris’ character and acknowledging his outstanding contribution to the Club.
“[Morris], who I've known for probably over 20 years now, has lived in the Richmond man behaviours, we reflect on them each week,” Dunne said.
“We vote on people who have shown those qualities throughout the week, and that steps up into our Francis Burke Award.
“This year the VFL team have also been doing those conversations, and they're doing that voting as well, and I'm delighted to announce that we're going to have a VFL version of the Francis Bourke Award, and that's going to be called the Steve Morris Award.
“Your [Morris] name will be etched there forever, and you deserve it. You are a true Richmond man.”
The inaugural Steve Morris Award winner will be announced at the Jack Dyer Medal next Tuesday night, which will be live streamed on the Richmond website and app, brought to you by Hostplus.
