Richmond coach Damien Hardwick believes young Tiger ‘tall’, Ben Griffiths, has the necessary attributes to make a decent fist of a key defensive post.

Griffiths, 200cm and 100kg, has been recalled to the Tigers’ line-up for Saturday’s Round 9 match against Hawthorn at the MCG.

It will be his first AFL game this season, and his 10th all-up, since making his debut in 2010.

A frustrating injury run has hampered Griffiths’ progress at the game’s highest level, but he has received another chance now due to the hamstring injury sustained by young gun defender, Dylan Grimes, in last Saturday’s night Dreamtime clash.

“He’s shown some good signs.  He’s got the athleticism, the speed . . . he can play the game,” Hardwick said.

“The thing that’s probably gone a little bit against him is he has had some injury concerns this year, which is a bit of bad luck.

“At some stage, we’re going to have to find out whether he can play at full-back.
“He’s certainly got the body size we’re looking for, and the athletic qualities we’re looking for, so we’ll see how it goes.”
