Talented teenager Ben Lennon joined a select club within the Club last Saturday.

When the 18-year-old debutant goaled, after coming on to the ground as Richmond’s ‘sub’, early in the third quarter of the clash with Melbourne, he became just the 10th player in the Tigers’ 106-year VFL/AFL history to score a goal with his first kick in league football.

Lennon, who was Richmond’s first pick (No. 12 overall) in the 2013 National Draft, had taken a clever mark about 45 metres out on a tight angle, almost immediately after entering the fray.  He went back and coolly slotted it through for a team-lifting goal.

Interestingly, one of those other Richmond players to achieve this rare feat of a goal with his first kick in league football, was Tommy Hafey, who the Club paid a special tribute to on Saturday, following his passing early in the week.

Hafey scored a goal with his first kick at senior league level for the Tigers in Round 6 of the 1953 season, against Collingwood at Victoria Park.

The detailed list of Richmond players who have goaled with their first kick in senior league ranks is:

  • Tommy Hafey, Round 6, 1953 v Collingwood, Victoria Park.
  • Ray Allsop, Round 7, 1955 v St Kilda, Punt Road.
