In 2018, the Tiger Army stunned the football world when it crashed through the 100,000-member mark.

Richmond became the first Club in the 100-plus year history of the VFL/AFL to achieve the milestone. To this day, no other Club has achieved the feat.

The final number of 100,726 smashed the previous year’s tally of 72,669. It truly was an extraordinary show of support.

The Tiger Army rallied again the following season, breaking its own record and finishing with 103,338 members.

Richmond CEO Brendon Gale remarked at the time that members “continue to be our Club’s greatest strength”. And so they have been again, in this most difficult of seasons.

Football has been a moving feast in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic but the Tiger Army has stood firm as always. The Club’s membership tally currently sits at 98,445.

The question is, can the Club crack the ton again in 2020? Can Richmond Football Club reach 100,000 members for the third consecutive season in the most unlikely of circumstances?

“That would be a truly remarkable number,” Gale said. “But I would never say never with the magnificent support we have.

“It would be an incredible feat in the current circumstances and a massive statement from our fans.

“The team is obviously missing playing in front of our supporters but to hit 100,000 members would give them a huge boost, particularly being based in Queensland for the rest of the season.”

The Club has seen 342 members purchase additional memberships to donate back to other members that have had to relinquish theirs due to financial hardship.

“That is an incredibly generous gesture and I know how much it is appreciated by those that can now continue to count themselves as members of our Club,” Gale said.

Richmond has until the end of August to reach what would be a remarkable milestone.
