Veteran Richmond star key forward Jack Riewoldt made a welcome return to goalkicking form in the Tigers’ 41-point victory over Brisbane at Metricon Stadium last night.

While Riewoldt had been working hard and typically selflessly in his forward role, he’d managed just six goals in eight games since the season’s resumption on June 11, all single returns.

Riewoldt hadn’t kicked multiple goals in a match since the 2020 season-opener against Carlton late March, but he hit the scoreboard strongly against the Lions with a game-high four six-pointers. He also had four inside-50s, seven score involvements all-up and took a game-high four marks inside Richmond’s forward-50 area.

“I’ve been building, just trying to do my thing,” Riewoldt told Fox Footy in a post-match interview.

“Last week (v Western Bulldogs) I probably had a few opportunities, but due to the fact there were three or four blokes on, they got the shots on goal.

“I know that the way we play it’s system-based and someone’s going to get a lick of the ice-cream. And today that was me . . . I kicked straight, which is important.

“It might be someone else next week.

“But just the gelling between me and ‘Lynchy’ (Tom Lynch) is probably the thing I’m most pumped about. We’ve got Mabior (Chol) down there as well.

“So we’ll continue to build, as I was saying, and it’s exciting for us . . .”

Riewoldt relishes playing against the Lions. He has scored seven bags of four goals in the past eight encounters between the two teams, dating back to Round 3 of the 2015 season.
