Amid the disappointment of Richmond’s loss to Greater Western Sydney at Marvel Stadium last night was the continued positivity about Daniel Rioli in his new role as a small defender.

Rioli again was one of the team’s best players, finishing the match with 22 disposals, six marks, six intercepts, four score involvements and 252 metres gained.

The triple premiership Tiger has totally thrived since being moved from the forward line to defence.

In six games there, he is averaging 19.9 disposals, 4.6 marks, 5.6 intercepts and 241.1 metres gained per match.

Rioli is providing plenty of attacking run for the team, as well as utilising the defensive pressure that was his trademark as a small forward.

His late-season form has been a big plus from the year for Richmond.
