Richmond has launched its 2025 AFLW Pride Round guernsey, which has proudly been designed by Tigers player Kate Dempsey.

The guernsey will be worn by Richmond in next Saturday night’s clash with North Melbourne and the Round 10 battle with Collingwood.

Dempsey called designing this year’s guernsey “a highlight of my career so far”, as she explained the elements that bring the design together.

“The black part of the jumper, I wanted it to be strong and bold this year and really stripping it back and being a really simple design. I think that's what Richmond do really well, the simple things,” Dempsey said.

“The black was meant to represent the parts of us that are all quite similar, or the things that we have in common with other people.

“The tiger mark with the beautiful rainbow colour through the middle was the parts of us that are maybe different, and maybe we haven't always accepted or felt like we belonged because of those parts, but identifying that everyone has those parts and that everyone does belong.”

The excitement can’t be hidden from Dempsey’s face when she talks about the guernsey, a feeling that extends down to her family.

“It was really exciting and such an honour,” she said.

“I had Kate (Sheahan) come up to me during a training session and I couldn't believe why she picked me, and it was such a cool experience to be able to go through.

“Straight away I went home and said to my partner, I get to design a jersey for the Richmond Football Club…it's just definitely a highlight of my career so far.

“It's incredibly exciting and alongside my teammates I'll be running out, and hopefully alongside my kids, who will run out through the banner with me wearing the jumper that their mum created. I'm sure they'll love it because it's rainbow colours, which they love.”

AFLW Pride Round will take place across Rounds 9-10 this season, with the annual celebration a highlight in the calendar for Dempsey.

“I'm so proud that the Club does Pride Round so well, and I think we are one of the clubs that really lead the way and incorporate women and gender diverse athletes into our program so well,” Dempsey said.

“I absolutely look forward to Pride Round. I think there's this electric feeling around wherever we play, obviously very colourful, very bright, very vibrant.

“It just feels a bit like home and comfortable, and all about connecting with your teammates. I just absolutely love the round…it's a lot of fun.

“I think it's so important. My look at Pride Round is, obviously with origins in LGBTQ+ community, but thinking of it more generally...for whatever reason people don't feel like they belong, and that is just a human thing that we all share.

“I think that Pride Round isn't this exclusive thing that only queer people can experience or wrap around. It really is for everyone, and about total inclusion across the board, and that's the premise I love.”
