Richmond’s decision to extend coach Adem Yze’s contract for a further two years beyond the 2026 season is further evidence of just how much the Club has changed in terms of providing coaching stability.
Since the start of this century, the Tigers have had just four coaches (not including a couple of caretakers) – Danny Frawley (2000-2004), Terry Wallace (2005-2009), Damien Hardwick (2010-2023) and Adem Yze since 2024.
That is a far cry from the two decades before then, when, following four-time premiership coach Tommy Hafey’s departure, the Club had 10 different coaches and made 11 coaching changes, with Tony Jewell having two separate stints in charge.
Here is how the Richmond coaching merry-go-round revolved throughout that time:
1977-1978: Barry Richardson
1979-1981: Tony Jewell
1982-1983: Francis Bourke
1984: Mike Patterson
1985: Paul Sproule
1986-1987: Tony Jewell
1988-1991: Kevin Bartlett
1992: Allan Jeans
1993-1995: John Northey
1996-1997: Robert Walls
1998-1999: Jeff Gieschen
