Shane Edwards led by example, producing an inspirational performance in his first game as Richmond’s captain, against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval yesterday.

Edwards, utilising his trademark creativity across the team’s half-back line, had 23 disposals, including 11 contested possessions, 11 intercepts, four rebound-50s, three inside-50s, took five marks, applied and finished with 380 metres gained to help lift the undermanned Tigers to a truly memorable win.

“I suppose as captain you want to perform a lot better, but the guys reassured me – the coaches, 'Dimma' (Damien Hardwick) and ‘Cotch’ (Trent Cotchin) – they just said keep doing what you’re doing,” Edwards said.

“'Everyone’s going to lift five percent. You lift five percent and that’s how we’re going to win the game'.”
