Jack Riewoldt’s six-goal haul, against Carlton in last night’s season-opener at the MCG, equalled the most goals scored by a Richmond player in a Round 1 match since 1994.
The opening round of that ’94 season saw a young Matthew Richardson, in just his second year of league football, boot eight goals in a Tiger team that lost by two points to Footscray at the Western Oval.
‘Richo’ subsequently kicked six goals against Essendon in Round 1 of the 1996 season at the MCG, and six years later, ‘snagged’ six against Collingwood in the 2002 opening round.
The record for the most goals scored by a Richmond player in Round 1, was set by Jack Titus in 1938, when he steered through nine against North Melbourne at Punt Road.
Richmond’s greatest-ever goalkicker notched six goals or more in opening round encounters four times throughout his wonderful career.
Riewoldt has now kicked six goals or more six times in his 69-game AFL career.
