Richmond is delighted to announce the appointment of Brett Ratten to a new role in its football department as Head of Coaching and Strategy.

Ratten has had an illustrious career in football, including more than 20 years of coaching.

He held senior coaching roles at Carlton (2007-2012) and St Kilda (2019-2022), qualifying for finals campaigns at both clubs, and was also the caretaker coach at North Melbourne in 2023.

Ratten most recently spent the past three years at Hawthorn as Head of Coaching Performance and Development, where the Hawks qualified for consecutive preliminary finals.

He was also previously an assistant coach at Hawthorn during their three premierships between 2013-15.

As a player, Ratten captained Carlton, won three best and fairests, was twice named All Australian and was a member of Carlton's 1995 premiership team.

Richmond Executive General Manager of Football Performance Tim Livingstone welcomed Ratten to the Club.

“We are delighted to welcome Brett and his enormous experience to Richmond,” Livingstone said.

“Brett will lead the Club's coach development programs, play a key role in the development of all our coaches and coaching framework, helping us maximise team and individual performance during an important period for our playing group.

“As a senior assistant to Adem, he will also strengthen our coaching group, with a particular focus on our defensive system across all lines, in game trends and opposition preparation.”

Ratten's appointment follows that of High Performance Manager, Selwyn Griffith from Melbourne and former Carlton List Manager, Nick Austin to a role in player acquisition, as key off-field additions to the Club this month.

He will commence at Richmond ahead of the return of the Club’s first to fourth year players on November 9.
